The US Department of Commerce has announced that it will tighten rules on the sale of advanced artificial intelligence chips to China.

In a statement from the US Department of Commerce, it was reported that new rules will be introduced to close loopholes that emerged following the restrictions on artificial intelligence chip exports last year.
The statement recalled that previous restrictions banned the sale of the Nvidia H100, the processor preferred by AI firms in the US, and pointed out that Chinese companies were instead able to purchase slightly slowed-down versions called the H800 or A800, which were not affected by US restrictions.

The statement noted that the new rules would also restrict other versions of the chips, emphasizing that in addition to Nvidia, the exports to China by semiconductor trading companies such as Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) would also be affected.
It was also noted that there are plans to expand the list of semiconductor manufacturing equipment subject to US restrictions.
US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, whose remarks were included in the statement, emphasized that they do not aim to harm China's economic growth with the restrictions, and explained that the goal is to prevent China from accessing advanced semiconductors that could trigger breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly for military use.
In this context, companies wishing to export artificial intelligence chips to China or other regions under embargo will be required to notify the US.
