Croutons emerged as a way to prevent waste and make use of stale bread. This practical solution gained popularity by cutting stale bread into cubes and frying them.
Croutons generally consist of bread pieces that have been cut into squares and then fried or baked. Breads with a hard outer crust, such as baguettes, are typically preferred for making croutons.
Croutons are used to add extra crunch and flavor by being added to soups and salads. Some specific salads, such as Caesar salad, are not considered complete without croutons. They are also used as a garnish in some dishes.
Croutons can be prepared plain, or they can be flavored with various spices, garlic, and herbs. This allows the croutons to add an extra aroma to soups and salads.
