Level 3 alert issued in Mexico: 'No one should leave their home'

Victor Manuel Castro, a government official for Mexico's Baja California, has issued a warning regarding Category 3 Hurricane Norma.

Regarding the hurricane, which the US National Hurricane Center says could reach speeds of 195 kilometers per hour, Castro stated, "no one should leave their home."

Baja California Tourism Minister Maribel Collins stated that despite all warnings issued in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, there are still approximately 40 thousand tourists in the area.

Officials shared the information that airports will be closed tomorrow.

WHAT DO HURRICANE CATEGORIES MEAN?

• Category 1

Causes damage to weak trees and road signs. Wind speed varies between 119-153 (km/h). Examples include the 1995 Allison and 1997 Danny hurricanes.

• Category 2

Causes damage to roofs and windows of buildings. Wind speed varies between 154-177 (km/h). Examples include the 1998 George and 1998 Bonnie hurricanes.

• Category 3

Can cause structural damage to buildings and weak walls may collapse. Large trees and signs are knocked over. Wind speed varies between 178-209 (km/h). Examples include the 1995 Roxanne and 1996 Fran hurricanes.

• Category 4

Serious damage to curtain walls, severe roof damage. All trees and signs are knocked over. Residential areas up to 10 km inland from the coast may need to be evacuated. Wind speed varies between 210-249 (km/h). Examples include the 1995 Luis, 1995 Felix, and Opal hurricanes.

• Category 5

Roof collapse in almost all homes and industrial buildings, total destruction of all trees, signs, and small houses. Residential areas up to 10–18 km inland may need to be evacuated. Wind speed is greater than 250 (km/h). Examples include the 1998 Mitch, 1998 Gilbert, and 2005 Katrina hurricanes.
