Proposal to condemn Israel's attack on Iran rejected in European Parliament

European Parliament (EP) member Marc Botenga of Belgium, speaking on behalf of The Left group in the General Assembly, emphasized that Israel's attack on Iran was a violation of international law.

Recalling that Russia's attack on Ukraine was condemned, Botenga stated, "When Russia attacks Ukraine illegally, they condemn it. When Israel attacks Iran illegally, they refuse to condemn it."

Botenga noted that he had requested a resolution on the matter to be voted on in the EP following the attack that took place over the weekend. He expressed his reaction by saying, "Because Israel attacked Iran illegally and criminally this weekend, we want a resolution on this to be voted on in the EP, because you cannot just attack another country. I know Israel has a habit of doing this, but it is still illegal and criminal. Because many civilians, including children, were killed and nuclear power plants were deliberately targeted. In this way, a risk of a nuclear disaster that could cause mass civilian casualties was created."

Botenga argued that the European Union should show the same consistency regarding Israel that it has shown against Russia. He criticized the EU leadership by saying, "But (European Commission President) Ursula von der Leyen insists on Israel's right to self-defense. It is Israel that is the aggressor."

Furthermore, emphasizing that Tehran should not be turned into Gaza, Botenga assessed, "We cannot continue to support criminal acts that violate international law by failing to condemn this. This is contrary to human rights."

Making a statement on his social media account following the General Assembly meeting, Botenga announced that he had proposed the condemnation of Israel's attack on Iran on behalf of The Left group, but that mainstream parties refused to put the proposal on the agenda.
