The surprise attack launched by Hamas, based in Palestine, against Israel on the morning of October 7 continues into its 3rd day with Israel's decision to blockade Gaza.
The government media office in Gaza issued a written statement regarding the losses suffered by the press community in Israeli attacks. The statement indicated that 7 members of the press have lost their lives, 10 have been injured, and 2 journalists are missing since October 7 in Israeli attacks.
The names of the deceased journalists were listed as Said et-Tavil, Muhammed Subh, Hişam en-Nevacihe, İbrahim Lafi, Muhammed Cerğun, Muhammed es-Salihi, and Esad Şemlah, while it was noted that Nidal el-Vahidi and Heysem Abdulvahid are missing.
40 MEDIA INSTITUTIONS TARGETED
The statement also reported that 40 media institutions were completely or partially damaged in Israel's bombardment of civilian residential areas.
It had been reported that Palestinian journalists Said et-Tavil and Muhammed Subh lost their lives in intense airstrikes by Israeli warplanes on the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza during the night hours. Subsequently, it was announced that journalist Hişam en-Nevacihe, who was wounded in an airstrike on the same area, had also passed away.
PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS ATTENDED THE FUNERAL OF THEIR COLLEAGUES
The funerals of journalists Tavil and Subh, who lost their lives in the Israeli attack, were held by their colleagues.
Palestinian media members gathered in front of Al-Shifa Hospital, where the bodies of Tavil and Subh were taken. Journalists gathered in the area attended the funeral prayer for their colleagues. Selame Maruf, Head of the Media Office of the Hamas-affiliated government in Gaza, stated in his speech at the funeral that Israel targeted journalists in cold blood while they were covering the news, saying, "They were targeted despite wearing clothing identifying them as members of the press; they became victims of Israeli brutality."
Maruf called on international institutions concerned with freedom of the press and expression to end their silence, which he said encourages Israel. Hamas Spokesperson Hazım Kasım, speaking on behalf of Palestinian groups, also said that Israel is deliberately killing journalists to cover up the truth.
Kasım stated that the Palestinian media will continue to expose Israel's crimes.
