Following the Esenyurt Municipality, the Ministry of Interior announced that trustees have been appointed to the DEM Party-run Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and the Halfeti Municipality in Şanlıurfa.
As reactions to the decision poured in, a statement also came from AKP Group Chair Abdullah Güler. Regarding the trustees, Güler stated, "A temporary assignment was made within the scope of Article 127 of our Constitution. You call it a 'trustee,' but the legal definition does not say so. Municipal mayoralties are not places where anyone can commit crimes. Practices will continue on a legal basis."
A response to AKP's Güler came from DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit. Making a statement via her social media account, Koçyiğit said:
'STOP APPOINTING TRUSTEES TO POLITICAL WILL'
"AKP Group Chair Abdullah Güler's statement that 'a temporary assignment was made within a legal framework' for the trustee appointments is a very clear distortion of the truth. In the past, those who came temporarily became permanent. In the past, those who came temporarily prevented municipal councils from functioning and usurped the public will and election law; they made corruption, theft, and plunder permanent. We call out once again to those who have made the usurpation of will a habit; stop appointing trustees against political will, and show respect for the public will! Do not try to cover up the political coup you have committed with word games, and do not try to deceive the public."
