Ministry breaks silence on Instagram

As of August 2, an access ban was imposed on the social media platform Instagram in Turkey. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) announced that Instagram was blocked due to 'failure to comply with catalog crimes.'
As reactions to the Instagram ban in Turkey grow, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Ömer Fatih Sayan made a statement.
Stating that they will do whatever is necessary 'to establish a cleaner and safer social media,' Sayan included the following remarks in his statement:
"When it comes to Western countries, we see that social media platforms take rapid measures on many issues, especially regarding catalog crimes. We have been demanding the same sensitivity and fair stance from the very beginning.
We want the safe, clean, and fair content mechanism that these platforms offer in countries where they comply with the rules to also be valid in Turkey.
This double standard applied by providers is a common problem for the whole world. Let us recall; we said, come open representative offices in our country, let us prevent the rights violations of our people. They did not want to come. They did not take the necessary steps against the crimes reported to them. We said, let us build a cleaner internet together, let our nation find a counterpart, they did superficial work with some virtual offices.
With the legal amendments we made, we prevented all these evasions. We see that they are still trying to maintain the same mentality. They say, 'I will do as I please, I will publish what I want, I will not publish what I want.' We have not accepted this, and we will not. We will do whatever is necessary to establish a cleaner and safer social media that respects our values and is free of disinformation."
