Following a decision by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), access to Instagram in Turkey was restricted as of August 2. No statement has yet been made regarding when the platform will be reopened. Discussions have begun on how the blocking of the platform will affect e-commerce. Providing information on the subject, Emre Ekmekçi, Vice Chairman of the Board of the Electronic Commerce Operators Association (ETİD), stated that 10 percent of total e-commerce in Turkey is conducted via social media, and emphasized that with the traffic generated by influencers, a daily e-commerce volume of 1.9 billion liras could be affected. Ekmekçi said, "10 percent of total e-commerce is done on social media. This corresponds to 930 million TL per day. Together with the influencers who generate traffic to the platforms, a volume of 1.9 billion liras could be affected. It will not disappear entirely, but it will shift to another time or another platform."

'THIS DECISION DOES NOT CREATE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT'

Underlining that all channels are important in e-commerce, Ekmekçi stated that they have a target of reaching a transaction volume of 3.4 trillion liras by the end of the year. Emphasizing that restricting any kind of medium while working toward this goal would not be beneficial for the sector, Ekmekçi expressed his opinion, saying, "Every channel is important to us. Instagram is one of the very important channels in Turkey. A significant economy revolves around that platform in Turkey. There are business models running on this platform, there are investments; this decision does not create a positive environment."
