New detail in KYK dormitory tragedy: Elevator inspection authority was given to a subcontractor
It has emerged that the inspection authority for the elevator involved in the tragedy that caused the death of 22-year-old Zeren Ertaş, who was staying at a KYK dormitory, was taken from the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) in 2020 and given to a private company. It was learned that following the tragedy, a committee composed of MMO members conducted an expert examination at the request of the prosecutor.

In the Efeler district of Aydın, a student lost her life after becoming trapped while trying to exit a malfunctioning elevator at the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK) Güzelhisar Girls' Dormitory. Following the heartbreaking incident, numerous students protested the administration, while the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced that the dormitory manager had been suspended.
According to the report by Mustafa Bildircin from BirGün, the events at the dormitory where the tragedy occurred and the reports prepared by Court of Accounts auditors following physical inspections of KYK dormitories have revealed a chain of negligence that resulted in the death of a student.
It was revealed that the responsibility for the elevator, which was under the inspection authority of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) until 2020, was transferred to an Adana-based subcontractor named Akredirest after the protocol signed between the Efeler Municipality and the chamber was unilaterally canceled by the municipal administration. It was reported that a lawsuit was filed against the municipality by the MMO due to the cancellation of the protocol and that the judicial process is still ongoing.
It was also learned that the elevator was manufactured by a company named Irmak Asansör, which was co-founded by the former CHP mayor of Aydın's Karacasu Municipality.
ISSUES WERE REPORTED
Officials from the Akredirest company, which holds the inspection authority for the elevator, argued that the elevators in the dormitory were inspected in September and that they reported the issues to the maintenance and repair company following the inspections.
