Statement from CHP regarding the Narin Güran case

CHP Deputy Chair Gökçe Gökçen, in a statement following the verdict in the Narin Güran case, said, "The process from the Narin Güran murder until today could not have been managed worse."

In her statement, Gökçen said, "The process from the Narin Güran murder until today could not have been managed worse. The public's sensitivity and legitimate interest were turned into a toy in the hands of those who wanted to turn the matter into a tabloid story. A politician who declared their close friendship with the family and that they knew things about the incident neither accounted for this, nor was information requested from them."

Gökçen continued her remarks as follows: 

"Documents and information were shared in violation of the confidentiality of the investigation," said Gökçen. "In this process, those who wanted to obscure the evidence were given an opportunity. The commission established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) conducted a forced investigation. As reflected in open microphones, appointments were made only because of fear of public reaction. 

The hearing for the Narin case and the hearing for baby Sıla were scheduled for the same day to dampen reactions and disperse public interest. Instead of turning a child murder into a tabloid story, we should have been discussing how to establish a system where no child is ever murdered again. This cannot be achieved through trials alone. At the same time, we have seen how a case does not take years and how efforts are made to remove the subject from the agenda as soon as possible. I hope the Minister of Justice will also make a statement regarding long trial durations and cases that remain unresolved for years from now on."
