New discovery: Is bone cancer becoming a thing of the past?
Academics in Sakarya have produced a "hybrid implant coating material" to be used in the treatment of bone cancer. The academics announced that bone cancer could become a thing of the past, stating, "This material will eliminate these problems, and our patients will face fewer issues."

A project titled "New Hybrid Coating Material Suitable for Use in Bone Damage" was prepared by Sakarya University (SAÜ) academics Prof. Dr. Cuma Bindal, Prof. Dr. Mediha İpek, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Özacar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serbülent Türk, Dr. Faculty Member İbrahim Altınsoy, and Sakarya University of Applied Sciences faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gözde Fatma Çelebi Efe.
Following approximately 2 years of work, a hybrid implant coating material suitable for use in bone damage repair was developed in the laboratories of the SAÜ Biomedical, Magnetic, and Semiconductor Materials Application and Research Center (BİMAYAM).
Efforts are currently underway to commercialize the material, which has been patented by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
The material, which is stated to have no side effects on the living body, is applied onto implants used to strengthen the skeletal system in place of damaged living tissue during cancer treatment.
In this way, it is aimed to prevent the recurrence of cancerous cells in the surgical tissue area and to prevent bone loss.
'THIS MATERIAL WILL ELIMINATE THESE PROBLEMS'
SAÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Hamza Al told an AA reporter that they are continuing their efforts to become a research university.
Stating that they have a strong academic staff, Al noted that the increase in the number of patents and utility models (industrial property rights that provide protection to the owners of inventions applicable to industrial technologies) is the greatest indicator of this.
Expressing that they support project work, Al said, "We have facilitated experience sharing to increase the project capacity and competence of our professors. We brought in experts in this field and introduced them to our professors. We have started to see the results of this. We have received 8 patents in the last 1 year. We have had 30 patent applications this year."
Stating that the "New Hybrid Coating Material Suitable for Use in Bone Damage" project has also received a patent, Al congratulated the academics for their work.
Pointing out that bone loss can occur after certain procedures in cancer patients, or that some problems can arise during the repair of bones, Al said, "Some implants can cause negative effects in the body. Hopefully, this material will eliminate these problems, and our patients will face fewer issues."
'A DIFFICULT DISEASE'
SAÜ Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Cuma Bindal also said that bone cancer is a difficult disease.
Stating that cancer in the bone is invasive, Bindal noted that they are conducting studies to develop a solution that will support treatment.
Bindal stated that they produced a hybrid implant coating material to be used in bone cancer treatment, and expressed that the material does not create any side effects for the living body.
Emphasizing that no implant material can perform biological functions and only provides structural support, Bindal explained that the material they developed prevents the recurrence of cancerous cells in the surgical tissue area, and while preventing bone loss, it also accelerates bone formation.
STUDIES CONTINUE
SAÜ Faculty of Engineering faculty member Dr. İbrahim Altınsoy drew attention to the fact that cancer, which is being seen at increasing rates worldwide, can also be seen in bone tissue, and stated that they are conducting studies aimed at repairing bone loss and preventing the development of cancer.
Altınsoy said that based on experimental studies and published articles, they produced a biomaterial to be used in bone cancer treatment at the end of approximately 2 years of work.
