A sad day for the Turcology community: Metin Arıkan has passed away

Prof. Dr. Metin Arıkan, a faculty member at the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature, has passed away at the age of 55.

Prof. Dr. Metin Arıkan, a faculty member at the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature, has passed away.

Arıkan, who conducted highly valuable research on the epic tradition and oral culture of the Turkic world, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Uluborlu, Isparta, following the funeral prayer to be held today at the Buca Hüdaverdi Mosque after the afternoon prayer.

WHO IS METİN ARIKAN?

Born on January 19, 1969, in Uluborlu, Isparta, Prof. Dr. Metin Arıkan completed his undergraduate studies in 1994 at the Ege University Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature.

He received his master's degree in 1999 with his two-volume thesis titled "Kazakh Variants of Köroğlu," prepared within the Ege University Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Turkish Folklore, and earned his doctorate in 2003 with his thesis titled "Typological Characteristics of Archaic Epics in the Kazakh Oral Tradition."

Metin Arıkan became an associate professor in the field of folklore at Ege University in 2012 and received the title of professor of folklore at the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Letters in 2018.
