Sasha Montenegro, one of the most popular actresses on the North American continent in the 1970s, suffered a stroke last night.

Montenegro was taken to the hospital but could not be saved despite all interventions.

It was reported that Montenegro had been battling lung cancer for some time and that the cancer had caused the stroke.

WHO IS SASHA MONTENEGRO?

Born in 1946 in Bari, Italy, and originally named Aleksandra Acimovic Popovic, Sasha Montenegro was the daughter of a Yugoslav family. The actress, who was of Montenegrin descent, later immigrated to Argentina to study journalism. A trip she took to Mexico in 1969 changed her life forever.

Discovered in Mexico, Montenegro's first film was A Dream of Love, directed by Ruben Galindo and starring Veronica Castro.

She received Mexican citizenship in 1989 and married former Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo in 1995.

She last appeared in the soap opera Las vias del amor in 2002.
