AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik has reacted sharply to CHP Chairman Özgür Özel's accusations of "dictatorship" and "coup-mongering" against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, following the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the appointment of a trustee in his place. Çelik described Özel's remarks as "political ignorance and disrespect."

In a post on his social media account, Çelik made the following statements:

"CHP Chairman Mr. Özgür Özel's remarks directed at our President are political ignorance and disrespect. If Mr. Özel wants to criticize 'dictatorship' and 'coup-mongering,' he should reckon with his own party's 'political criminal record' regarding every coup against the nation since 1960."

Çelik claimed that Özel attacks President Erdoğan during every debate over his own chairmanship and engages in "politics of lies," noting the following:

"Özgür Özel should abandon his politics of lies directed at our President and our party, and face these criticisms during a period when his own chairmanship capacity is being questioned within the CHP. Özel has also criticized the call for unity and solidarity made by our President in line with the 'Century of Turkey' goals. We do not expect Mr. Özel to understand our President's call when he has not even been able to ensure unity within his own party."
