Apple, which had been rising rapidly among the world's most valuable companies, had held the lead for years. It is worth noting that other technology companies are also in the top 10. However, Apple had been going through difficult times as iPhone sales failed to meet expectations and global demand reached a saturation point.

Apple, which at one point reached a valuation of 3 trillion dollars, lost as much as 170 billion dollars in value within months.

This worked in favor of Microsoft, which had been on the rise for some time, and the software giant, continuing to increase its value, approached Apple's valuation. The ongoing loss of value at Apple, combined with the increase in value at Microsoft, brought the latter's market capitalization to 2.888 trillion dollars.

Apple's valuation of 2.887 trillion dollars continues to erode.

While Apple's shares lost 3.3 percent of their value in January, Microsoft's shares saw a 1.8 percent increase in value.
