The true colors of the planets Uranus and Neptune have been discovered

New research indicates that both planets are actually a similarly pale, greenish-blue shade.

Scientists have stated that Uranus and Neptune are not the colors we thought they were. Neptune is usually depicted as a deep, dark blue, while Uranus is mostly seen as a pale green or cyan.

However, they are actually much more similar to each other than we previously believed. According to the new research, both planets are a specific shade of pale, greenish-blue.

EXPECTED TO BE DEPICTED WITH THEIR NEW COLORS

Astronomers have confirmed the tone of the planets and published updated images as part of a new study. Researchers had long known that the two planets looked different from how they were depicted in most modern images. The new images are expected to correct this error.

According to the study reported by Independent Türkçe, the error arose due to images from 20th-century missions sent to photograph the planets. These images, which arrived in separate colors, were combined with the aim of obtaining a "true" image of what the planets might look like.

Researchers had also added more contrast to the images so that Neptune's clouds, rings, and winds could be seen more clearly.

However, this process caused the planets, especially Neptune, to appear in a much more intense blue color. Patrick Irwin of Oxford University, who led the research, said, "Although the known Voyager 2 images of Uranus were published in a form closer to the 'true' color, those of Neptune were actually stretched and enhanced, and therefore artificially made too blue."

Although the artificially saturated color was known among planetary scientists at the time (and the images were published with captions explaining this), this distinction was lost over time.

By applying our model to the initial data, we have managed to recreate the most accurate depiction of the color of both Neptune and Uranus to date. Scientists created the new images using data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory. These capture the entire color spectrum, allowing scientists to assemble images that are much closer to the true appearance of these objects.

The new images were reported in the article titled "Modelling the seasonal cycle of Uranus's colour and magnitude, and comparison with Neptune," published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
