A first for BYD: It overtook Tesla in Europe
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle market by surpassing Tesla in Europe.
According to data from JATO Dynamics, sales of fully electric cars by China-based BYD reached 7,231 units in Europe in April, an increase of 169 percent. During the same period, Tesla's sales fell by 49 percent to 7,099 units. Thus, for the first time, BYD sold more electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla.

When plug-in hybrid vehicles are included, BYD's total sales showed an increase of 359 percent. JATO Dynamics analyst Felipe Munoz stated that this situation is a turning point for the European automotive market. Munoz said, "It is a major achievement for BYD to surpass Tesla, even though it officially began its operations in Europe in late 2022."
While electric vehicle registrations in Europe increased by 28 percent in April, Volkswagen's electric car sales rose by 61 percent. Tesla's sales in Europe, however, are on a downward trend.
