Chinese automotive giants challenge Tesla in autonomous driving
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are gaining a significant competitive advantage over Tesla in autonomous driving technology. BYD and other brands are drawing attention with their affordable and advanced driver-assistance systems.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are challenging Tesla's leadership in autonomous driving technology. By offering its "Eye of the Gods" driver-assistance system for free in some models, BYD is complicating Tesla's strategy in the Chinese market. This move stands out as a development that threatens Tesla's robotaxi projects and market value.

In early 2024, BYD made a major impact on the Chinese automotive market by introducing this revolutionary system. Shenzhen-based investor Taylor Ogan states that BYD's system is more capable than Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) system.
ALSO SUPPORTED BY THE GOVERNMENT
The Chinese government is also supporting these technological breakthroughs. Companies like Leapmotor and Xpeng are standing out in the competition by offering advanced driving systems in their affordable vehicles. An analysis by Reuters reveals that BYD's driver-assistance hardware costs are lower than Tesla's.
In the face of this competition, Tesla plans to launch a robotaxi trial with 10 to 20 vehicles in Texas. This trial is seen as a critical step for the company's future. However, the rapidly developing technologies of Chinese competitors and government support are making things difficult for Tesla.
Tech giants like Huawei are also participating in the autonomous driving race. Huawei is increasing its influence in the market by providing technology support to firms such as Chery and SAIC. Chinese companies are working to certify Level 3 autonomous systems and aim to get ahead of Tesla in this field.
One of Tesla's biggest challenges in China is its inability to transfer data collected in the country to the US. This situation allows Chinese competitors to gain an advantage in artificial intelligence training. BYD's high sales volume helps it reduce costs and improve its technology by collecting more road data. Having sold 4.2 million vehicles last year, BYD is further increasing its cost advantage by demanding price cuts from its suppliers.
