Electric transformation and Chinese influence accelerate in the European bicycle market
While electric bicycles are experiencing a major surge in Europe, warnings are drawing attention to the possibility that Chinese-origin production could create a new wave of competition in the sector.
The bicycle industry in Europe is witnessing one of its most significant transformations in recent years. While traditional bicycle sales remain steady, the rise of electric bicycles is effectively reshaping the market. However, industry representatives are highlighting the competition, particularly from China, alongside this growth and are expressing concerns about the future.
In the Czech Republic, where around 400,000 bicycles are sold annually, while sporty models are still preferred, the market share of e-bikes is increasing rapidly. One-quarter of the bicycles sold in the country now consist of electric models. In Germany, the picture is even more striking: one out of every two bicycles sold is an electric model. Germany's total bicycle market has reached a level of approximately 4 million units per year.
Consumers in the region mostly prefer mid-segment products in the 2,000-4,000 Euro range. However, in addition to manufacturers' investments, the supply chain plays a decisive role in the growth of the market. A large portion of the parts is still imported from Asia, particularly from China.
CHINA'S RISE CREATES UNCERTAINTY IN THE SECTOR
Chinese brands are coming to the fore in the European market with more aggressive pricing and production strategies. Industry officials are of the opinion that a situation similar to the rapid Chinese penetration seen in the automotive sector could be observed in bicycles as well. Local firms producing in the Czech city of Koprivnice, even though they carry out all their production in their own country, express their concerns with the following words: “This is just like the automotive sector. China will crush the Czech and European bicycle market within five to ten years. Whatever is happening in cars, the same will happen here.”
The European Union is trying to keep competition in balance with anti-dumping duties. However, it is stated that cheap products coming from China are creating pressure on the market and could fundamentally change the structure of the sector in the long term.
SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AND CUSTOMER LOYALTY AT THE FOREFRONT
Today, producing a good bicycle is no longer enough on its own. According to experts in the sector, companies should focus on logistics capability, continuous service opportunities, and building strong bonds with customers. For example, companies like BFI are not only aiming for the title of “best Czech bicycle brand” but are also focusing on creating a loyal customer community.
The future of electric bicycles lies in moving them beyond being just an ordinary sports vehicle and making them an important alternative in urban transportation. Experts predict that there will be a major increase in sales if safe bicycle paths and transportation infrastructure, which we see especially in Scandinavia and Western European countries, are developed.
During this period, the European bicycle industry faces significant tests, including both technological innovations and the reduction of external dependency. How the dynamics in the sector will evolve will become clearer in the coming years.
