Hertz admits to data breach: Customer information at risk
Hertz has confirmed a security breach involving customer information due to a data leak originating from a supplier. The stolen data includes contact details, credit card information, and driver's license data.
Global vehicle rental company Hertz Global has confirmed data breach allegations that have been circulating for some time. In a statement released by the company on Monday, it was stated that data was stolen in a breach involving one of its suppliers. While the company noted that the leaks could affect personal data, it announced that some customers' contact information, credit card details, and driver's license information may have been leaked during this process.
'PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE USED FOR FRAUD'
According to a report on CNBC-e, the company announced that hackers who exploited zero-day vulnerabilities in the platform of Cleo Communications, a supplier providing file transfer services, between October and December 2024 may have accessed some customer information. In a notice on its website, Hertz added that the affected data could include customers' contact, credit card, and driver's license information, and that a small portion of social security or passport information might also have been affected.

In a statement to Reuters, the company said, "Our forensic investigation has found no evidence that Hertz's own network was affected by this incident."
The company stated that it is not aware of any incidents where personal information has been misused for fraudulent purposes.

Here is the data Hertz has admitted was stolen: Customer names, contact information, dates of birth, credit card information, driver's license information, and information related to workers' compensation claims. For a very small number of individuals, social security or other government identification numbers, passport information, Medicare or Medicaid IDs (associated with workers' compensation claims), or information related to injuries associated with vehicle accident claims.
