SUV share in Turkey nears 65 percent: Best-selling models of the first half revealed

While total sales in the automobile market continue to show a contraction trend, the rise of SUV models has persisted.

According to June data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), 284,493 of the 440,234 automobiles sold in Turkey during the January-June period were SUV body-type models.

With this picture, the share of SUVs in the automobile market approached the 65 percent level in the first half of the year. A similar trend continued in June; of the 83,978 automobiles sold throughout the month, 53,572 were SUV models.

In the first half of the year, the Toyota C-HR topped the SUV sales on a model basis. The Toyota C-HR reached 13,992 units in sales during the January-June period. It was followed by the Renault Duster with 12,863 units and the Togg T10X with 12,003 units.

Looking at the brands, Volkswagen, whose sales consist largely of SUV models, stood out. While Peugeot also ranked high among the brands selling the most SUVs, Renault, Hyundai, and Toyota were the brands that followed in the top ranks.

SUV LIST OF THE FIRST HALF

A contraction was also recorded in the general automobile and light commercial vehicle market in the first half of the year. The total market declined by 8.19 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 558,179 units. The contraction in automobile sales was calculated at 9.79 percent.

The majority of the market consisted of vehicles in the A, B, and C segments, which have higher tax advantages. While C-segment automobiles stood out with 241,100 units in sales, SUVs maintained their leadership in body type.

TOGG T10X STOOD OUT IN JUNE

Specifically for June, the Togg T10X took the first place in SUV sales. The Togg T10X reached 2,933 units in sales throughout the month, placing it ahead of the Renault Duster and Renault Boreal.

The impact of the SUV list on the general automobile ranking was also noteworthy. SUV models such as the Toyota C-HR, Renault Duster, Togg T10X, Volkswagen Taigo, and Peugeot 2008 were among the top 10 best-selling automobiles in the January-June period.

Renault maintained its leadership in automobile sales on a brand basis. Renault ranked first in the first 6 months of the year with 74,129 automobile sales. Fiat was in second place with 47,250 units, and Volkswagen was in third place with 45,165 units.

The data reveals that despite the contraction in the total market, consumer preference continues to shift toward SUV models. Especially compact SUVs and the domestic electric model Togg T10X found their place at the top of the sales lists in the first half of the year.
