Toyota Corolla is changing from the ground up: Date set for production

Toyota plans to produce its new generation Corolla model in China starting in 2028. Thanks to a new vehicle platform compatible with different engine and energy systems, the company aims to reduce production costs and adapt more quickly to changing market conditions.

THE NEW COROLLA WILL COME WITH DIFFERENT ENGINE OPTIONS

The production of the new generation Corolla will be undertaken by FAW Toyota Motor, a joint venture between Toyota and China's FAW Group. The model will be developed on a versatile vehicle architecture that can be used with electric, hybrid, gasoline, and other powertrain systems.

Toyota also uses this platform in some models under the Lexus brand. By adapting this architecture to the Corolla, the company aims to shorten development time and lower costs. Additionally, it will be possible to shape production according to potential changes in demand for different engine types.

CONCEPT MODEL WAS INTRODUCED LAST YEAR

Toyota showcased the concept version of the new generation Corolla at the Japan Mobility Show last autumn. Koji Sato, who was the President of Toyota at the time and currently serves as Vice Chairman, drew attention to the differences in automotive markets, stating, "The world is very large and diverse. The roads are different, and so are the energy realities."

Sato had also announced that battery electric, hybrid, and gasoline options were planned to be offered in the model family.

DECLINE IN THE CHINESE MARKET AFFECTS PRODUCTION PLANS

Toyota is experiencing a decline in its sales in China. The company sold 118,449 vehicles in August, including the Lexus brand. This figure represents a 23 percent decline compared to the same period last year.

While electric cars and other new energy vehicles were previously among the key drivers of market growth in China, the slowdown in domestic new car sales is affecting manufacturers. Intense competition driving prices down is also putting pressure on company profitability.

TOYOTA EXPANDS ELECTRIC VEHICLE INVESTMENTS

Toyota plans to produce new generation electric vehicles with longer ranges for the Lexus brand in China starting next year. The company's agenda also includes the production of extended-range electric vehicles, where the internal combustion engine is used solely to generate electricity.

The automaker is also continuing its efforts to transition vehicles to electric systems and equip them with smart technologies. In this context, it is stated that the company is taking steps to restructure its two local joint ventures in China.
