Europe's giant hotel operator files for bankruptcy

Revo Hospitality Group, one of the major players in European hospitality, has filed for insolvency under self-administration at the Berlin Charlottenburg Local Court after failing to overcome financial difficulties, despite its operations across 12 countries and 146 different cities. The company, which has been a prominent name in the sector since 2008 and previously operated under the name HR Group, had reached a significant position on the continent with more than 260 hotels in a short time by following an aggressive growth strategy in recent years.

Revo Hospitality Group gained an advantage with its own brands such as Vagabond Club, Hyperion, and Aedenlife, while also undertaking franchise operations for international chains such as Hilton, Marriott, Accor, Wyndham, and IHG. However, the expansion that gained momentum in recent years increased the company's financial burden and made it difficult to manage.

Within the scope of the announced plan, it was stated that approximately 140 subsidiaries affiliated with Revo Hospitality Group were included in the bankruptcy process. The company's failure to reach expected occupancy targets throughout the year and falling below the levels set for 2025 revenue were also effective in this decision, which was taken due to a financial bottleneck.

INCREASE IN COSTS AND INTEGRATION PROBLEMS WERE DECISIVE IN THE BANKRUPTCY

In the statement made to the public, the company management clearly shared the reasons for the current financial problems. The company's text included the following statements:

“Approximately 140 companies belonging to REVO Hospitality Group have filed for insolvency under their own management at the Charlottenburg District Court. Approximately 125 hotels in Germany and Austria will continue their operations with their 5,500 employees. The process will be supervised by administrators appointed by the court. They also cited 'rising wage costs' and 'sharp increases in minimum wages' as reasons. In addition, they stated that the 'increase in rent, energy, and food costs' 'negatively affected the business.' The statement concluded as follows: 'Above all, the strong expansion of the Revo Hospitality Group in recent years has led to redundant structures and integration problems.'”

This assessment by the company drew attention to the fact that the increase in minimum wage and general operating costs, in particular, increased the scale of the crisis. It was also emphasized that the redundant structuring and compliance difficulties brought about by rapid growth were among the main factors in the bankruptcy.

It was reported that the hotels continuing their operations across Europe, primarily in Germany and Austria, will not close in the current situation and that the job security of approximately 5,500 employees will be protected.

The company stated that the process will be carried out transparently under court supervision and that the financial foundation of Revo Hospitality Group will be strengthened through restructuring.

Sector representatives state that the future of this group, which has a significant share in the European hotel industry, could have significant effects on companies working with franchise networks. In particular, the chain is expected to transition to a new financial model after meetings with international investors until the summer months.
