Starbucks employees go on strike

Unionized Starbucks employees across the U.S. are launching a walkout as of Thursday. This strike coincides with Starbucks' popular "Red Cup Day" campaign, during which a high volume of customers is expected.

The Workers United union plans to strike at at least 40 different locations in cities such as New York, San Diego, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Seattle. The union states that the protests could continue indefinitely if no progress is made in the collective bargaining process.

Starbucks employees have been pursuing unionization efforts since late 2021, but a collective bargaining agreement has yet to be signed. Jasmine Leli, a barista in New York, said, "We are ready to do whatever it takes. Starbucks' failure to finalize this contract is disappointing both baristas and customers."

STARBUCKS' CLAIMS AND THE UNION'S DEMANDS

Starbucks rejected the union's accusations, criticizing Workers United for not coming to the negotiating table. Company spokesperson Jaci Anderson expressed disappointment that the union chose to strike instead of participating in talks. Anderson stated that the strike would not affect the majority of stores and that service would continue.

Workers United officials rejected the latest contract offer presented by Starbucks, finding it insufficient. The offer was criticized for including only a minimum annual raise of 2 percent and failing to guarantee sufficient working hours to access social benefits. Starbucks, on the other hand, argues that it offers the best working conditions in the retail sector, stating that baristas earn an average of over 19 dollars per hour and that their total hourly compensation, including social benefits, exceeds 30 dollars.
