Is economic development an end in itself? Yes. The situation and democracy of countries that have not completed their economic development are evident. If the development process does not provide more hope and more opportunities to ever-increasing masses of people, then in our view, the path taken is not successful. The methods used to achieve economic development are at least as important as the development itself.
We believe that the only result of economic development that carries real value is the increase to be recorded in the economic, political, and spiritual well-being of each citizen as an individual. Because prosperity is the greatest concern of free and independent governments, this belief constitutes the foundation of the unity of thought that is essential for a shared destiny in the free world. Nations working together on the path of development and peace is only possible based on the principle of mutual interest.
The construction of a democratic order that will make it possible to realize and guarantee national solidarity, social justice, and the peace and prosperity of the individual and society is possible through economic development policy. Increasing national savings, managing investments with the priorities required for the benefit of society, and realizing economic, social, and cultural development through democratic means are possible with economic development policy. The success of our economic and social development will simultaneously be a victory for our democracy.
It has become mandatory to exert every effort to reach a high rate of development so that the Turkish nation can reach a standard of living compatible with human dignity and live under conditions worthy of its honor.
Economic development policy is the entirety of policies and strategies implemented by the state to accelerate a country's economic growth, raise living standards, and ensure structural transformation. This situation indicates that not only economic growth, but also long-term goals such as improving income distribution, increasing employment, and industrialization are part of economic development policy.
In conclusion, the main goal of economic development policy should be to make economic growth sustainable, reduce unemployment, make income distribution fairer, support industrial and technological development, and reduce regional inequalities.
