As a civil engineer, I have spent my life among contractors.
Especially as an expert witness and consultant.
As I have written before, the engineer-contractor group has made a tremendous contribution to Turkey's development, the establishment of its infrastructure, and its entry into the class of civilized nations.
Furthermore, through the projects they have undertaken abroad, they have both introduced Turkish engineering to the world and brought foreign currency into the country by providing resource transfers.
On the other hand, there is no shortage of contractors we call "self-taught," who live day-to-day, do business within a circle of friends and acquaintances, act as sponsors for regional politics, wear underwear bought from the bazaar under their Gucci suits, drive heavily damaged vehicles, wear pointed-toe fake Italian shoes, and often carry chains.
These are the contractors who become a plague upon us during earthquakes.
One of our engineer-contractor brothers, who has been doing industrial work for many years, received news years ago that high-rise buildings were going to be built in his hometown.
They called him and said, "You come too."
He went and saw that 10-15 story building permits had been granted for beautiful apricot orchards.
Plots with 2-3 story garden layouts were about to reach for the stars.
The self-taught contractors, drooling at the mouth, were lining up to congratulate the mayor.
Their eyes were popping out of their heads, and they were dancing with joy.
The self-taught ones, who didn't know what a soil survey was and had never even heard of it in their lives, were going to have 15-story buildings constructed.
While their joy was hitting the ceiling, they had already started selling the apartments off-plan.
Our engineer-contractor brother did not participate in this charlatanism.
Not wanting to upset the mayor, he said, "Mr. Mayor, I hope these apricot trees don't take their revenge on us," and left his hometown.
There is no one left who hasn't heard of or doesn't know the state of Malatya after the earthquake.
The 15-story buildings in the Yeşilyurt region, famous for its apricots, were heavily damaged.
We built them with our own money, we are tearing them down with our own money, and we are hauling away the rubble.
The zoning permit will return to a 2-3 story garden layout.
It is a perfect elasto-plastic movement.
If the apricot trees took their revenge, won't the olive trees, which are mentioned in holy books and even considered sacred, do the same?
