Ukrainian President Zelensky came to Istanbul a few days ago and met with Erdoğan.
Who is Zelensky?
He is a Jewish individual... A supporter of Israel under all circumstances... He did not just stop at condemning Hamas—which Erdoğan likened to the Kuvayı Milliye (National Forces)—during Israel's massacres in Gaza, but also requested support for Israel... Most recently, he took the side of these genocidal perpetrators in the US-Israel attacks on Iran, acting as an informant by saying, "Russia is providing intelligence to Iran regarding Israel's energy facilities."
Not only did Erdoğan not worry about Zelensky's pro-Israel stance, but he also did not worry about the fact that just 9 days ago, Ukrainian forces had struck a Turkish oil tanker off the coast of the Bosphorus, and he hosted him at the Dolmabahçe Palace.
The presence of the Bağcılar District Governor and an officer from the Naval Forces in the delegation that welcomed Zelensky upon his arrival in Istanbul was interpreted as a reaction to that attack; however, it later emerged that he went from Istanbul to Damascus on one of Erdoğan's planes.
Zelensky's visit to Syria was also very strange. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was with him. They met together with Shara. A scene emerged in the seating arrangement where Fidan appeared to be sitting alongside the Ukrainian delegation.
Why they went together, as well as whether they traveled on the same plane, was questioned. In response to questions from Cumhuriyet, Foreign Ministry sources interpreted Zelensky's travel to Damascus on Turkey's plane by saying, "Such mutual assistance occurs from time to time between states," while stating that Fidan attended the meeting of the two heads of state upon invitation and that the entire program in Syria was "conducted in accordance with protocol rules."
As for whether Zelensky and Fidan traveled on the same plane; the visit is over, everyone has returned to their country, but Foreign Ministry sources did not disclose whether Fidan was on the plane, citing "security" reasons!..
What is the Status of the Maritime Jurisdiction Agreement?
Since Foreign Ministry sources also wanted the content to be at the forefront rather than such debates, let us look at the content of the Syria visit.
When Zelensky arrived in Damascus, he said, "We are continuing active Ukrainian diplomacy aimed at real security and economic cooperation. We have important meetings ahead—various substantive formats have been prepared."
After the meetings, he made the following statement:
"We are building new relationships, new opportunities, and expanding our efforts to ensure security. We managed to cover everything: from security and defense issues to the situation created in the region by developments around Iran, and energy and infrastructure cooperation between our countries. We will also continue to work on food security. We held detailed discussions on how to overcome the consequences of the war and the negotiation process regarding the war that Russia is waging against our state and our people... We will work together even more closely so that our peoples and our countries become stronger and our economies grow stronger."
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, on the other hand, met with Tom Barrack, who appears as Trump's Ankara Ambassador and Special Envoy for Syria, one day after returning to Turkey. We learned what they discussed from Barrack's post, which stated, "As we continue our work in line with the US President's vision for a safer region, our partnership with Turkey continues to maintain its vital importance."
What is the "safer region vision" of a madman like Trump, and what kind of "vital partnership" is Turkey conducting with them; try to understand!..
The scenarios of the pro-government media are also extra; they claim a new trade highway stretching from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean is being established in the massive game in the Ankara-Damascus-Kiev triangle... That Turkish ports could be the main headquarters for trade between Ukraine and Syria... That Ukraine is trying to create a field of competition against Russia in Syria, and Syria is aiming to increase its defense capacity against Israel.
It seems that Turkey is designing the region and acting as a guarantor for Ukraine in the eyes of Syria, etc. However, despite all this power and might, we have a small problem that we have not been able to solve for 1.5 years!..
Namely;
The Assad administration was overthrown in December 2024. Since January 2025, our man Colani/Shara has been the head of state.
While Israel has settled in the Greek Cypriot side, and everyone from the US to the UK, Greece, and France has piled into the Eastern Mediterranean, we still have not been able to sign the maritime jurisdiction agreement with Syria!..
Yet, when Minister of Transport Abdülkadir Uraloğlu passed the buck on this issue to the Foreign Ministry last September, he said, "The Syrians have emerged from the war, but they know how to negotiate well. We must not miss the process. That is why we are following the process," and in December, it was said that "Turkey has made its preparations and negotiations are continuing."
What we mean is; like the saying "if the bald man had a fingernail, he would scratch his own head," if only the maritime jurisdiction agreement, which is of vital importance to us, were handled before Ukraine manages its agreements with Syria... Of course, if the US and Greece allow it!..
Zelensky's Patriarchate Visit
After meeting with Erdoğan and before going to Syria, Zelensky made one more visit in Istanbul. The person he visited was Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who enabled the Ukrainian Church to separate from the Russian Church and join his own, and who signed an agreement for this with Petro Poroshenko, the president before Zelensky.
In the 1.5-hour meeting, Zelensky announced that they discussed the negotiation process regarding the peace agreement with Russia and the development of the church in Ukraine, and that he invited Bartholomew to his country for the 35th anniversary of Ukraine regaining its independence.
And in his statement, he referred to Bartholomew as "ecumenical," contrary to the Treaty of Lausanne.
Let us note that in the Easter message Bartholomew published just two days ago, he again used the title "Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch."
If Bahçeli Could Just Look Up from the "Founding Leader"
We are coming to this;
Although Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ömer Keçeli emphasized that "there is no change in our state policy regarding the position of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople," Minister Hakan Fidan describes the title "ecumenical" as a "concept that concerns the internal and religious relationship between an institution representing a specific and recognized belief system and its believers within the framework of religious terminology," and views it as an "internal matter of the Orthodox world and faith."
In summary; they do not worry about Bartholomew considering himself the leader of 300 million Orthodox and acting like a head of state.
However, we know that MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli, the partner of the AKP, does not think so and has stated loudly, "There is no institution or job description called ecumenical in Turkey. According to the Treaty of Lausanne, while it is stipulated that the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople should not engage in political and administrative affairs and should provide spiritual service to our Greek-Orthodox citizens in our country, he cannot have any status other than being a religious official affiliated with the Fatih District Governorship."
Ah, if only he would look up from the "founding leader"-themed opening and follow where the Patriarchate's affairs are leading!..
