The 49-year-old Karaköy multi-story car park had been demolished: Historical findings discovered during Karaköy project excavation

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has completed the demolition of the 49-year-old, 7-story car park as part of the Karaköy Car Park Project.

Historical findings were encountered during the controlled inspection excavations carried out as part of the work.

The teams conducting the work informed the Istanbul No. II Regional Board for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

In line with the decision of the relevant board, the excavations will be expanded by experts under the supervision of the İBB KUDEB (Conservation Implementation and Supervision Directorate) and the relevant museum.

The report and photographs to be prepared will be submitted to the Preservation Board.

IT WILL BE A 7 THOUSAND SQUARE METER SQUARE

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Assembly, with a unanimous decision taken during its June 2021 sessions, had decided to demolish the 49-year-old Karaköy Multi-Story Car Park, which was Istanbul's first multi-story car park, and replace it with a square.

When the Karaköy Car Park Project is completed, the face of Beyoğlu and Karaköy will change. In addition to the underground car park, the region will gain a 7 thousand square meter square.

An underground car park supported by specially designed mechanisms will be built, maintaining the same vehicle capacity as the removed car park. The empty space that will form in the footprint of the removed structure will be designed as a square.

Within the square, there will be multi-purpose event spaces to be used for culture and arts activities, seating groups, and viewing areas.
