77th Cannes Film Festival begins tomorrow: 22 films to compete for the Palme d'Or
At the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France, where American actress and writer Greta Gerwig serves as jury president, 22 films will compete for the Palme d'Or. It is noted that disruptions may occur at the 77th Cannes Film Festival due to a strike call by cinema and festival workers.
The Cannes Film Festival, one of Europe's most prestigious film festivals, begins tomorrow. The festival will conclude on May 25.
The opening ceremony of the festival, where prominent American cinema actress Meryl Streep will be the guest of honor, will take place tomorrow at the Grand Theatre Lumiere stage in the city of Cannes.
This year, the festival, with actress Gerwig serving as jury president, has 9 jury members. Among the main competition jury members is screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, the wife of Palme d'Or-winning director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
The jury will also include American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Lebanese screenwriter and director Nadine Labaki, Spanish director, producer, and screenwriter Juan Antonio Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu, and French actor and producer Omar Sy.
22 FILMS TO COMPETE FOR THE PALME D'OR
Twenty-two films will compete this year for the Palme d'Or, which was awarded last year by jury president Ruben Östlund to Justine Triet's film 'Anatomy of a Fall'.
The festival will open with the French comedy film 'The Second Act' (Le deuxieme Acte) by Quentin Dupieux.
As part of the festival, a short film by French actress, director, screenwriter, and producer Judith Godreche, which focuses on the stories of victims of sexual violence, will also be screened.
STRIKE CALL
It is noted that disruptions may occur at the 77th Cannes Film Festival due to a strike call by cinema and festival workers.
The "Poverty Behind the Screens" (Sous les Ecrans la Deche) collective, formed by cinema workers, issued a strike call last week that could "disrupt the event," covering both festival staff and other cinema workers.
The Cannes Film Festival management also made statements to the site Deadline, known for its Hollywood news, regarding the strike planned by festival workers due to reasons related to insufficient wages and unemployment insurance.
In the statement, it was noted that they "are aware of the difficulties faced by staff who work on a contract basis for film festivals, are affected by the French unemployment insurance reform, and have to struggle with the decline in their social rights," and it was recorded that they are ready to establish dialogues to resolve the issue.
The Audiovisual and Cinema Experts branch of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) announced in a social media post that they support the strike planned by the festival workers.
