Aída Gómez’s ‘Carmen’ to be performed at the Atatürk Cultural Center on October 4

Aída Gómez, one of the international representatives of Spanish dance, is bringing Carmen, one of the most powerful female characters in the performing arts, to Istanbul. Gómez and her company will meet the audience at the Atatürk Cultural Center on October 4, 2026, as part of the Istanbul Culture Route Festival.

The performance combines Georges Bizet’s iconic music with pieces composed specifically for this production by flamenco guitarist and composer José Antonio Rodríguez. Carmen’s story, woven with passion, love, jealousy, and freedom, will be reinterpreted through the energy of flamenco and the powerful narrative language of Spanish dance.

A FREEDOM-CENTERED INTERPRETATION OF CARMEN

In the production, which was first staged at the Festival de Jerez in 2006 and has toured from Europe to Asia, Gómez treats Carmen not just as a character at the center of a tragic love story, but as a strong female figure who makes her own choices and refuses to give up her freedom, no matter the cost.

Aída Gómez’s career began when she joined the Ballet Nacional de España at the age of 14. Rising to the position of principal dancer within three years, the artist worked with prominent names such as Antonio Gades, Joaquín Cortés, and Maurice Béjart, developing a unique stage language that spans from classical Spanish dance to flamenco.

In 1998, at the age of 30, Gómez became the youngest artistic director in the history of the Ballet Nacional de España, during which time she merged traditional heritage with contemporary stage aesthetics. Throughout her career, the artist has also performed on major stages such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Radio City Music Hall in New York, and Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Gómez merged her identity as a dancer and choreographer with the language of cinema in Salomé, directed by Carlos Saura; she also appeared in Saura’s film Iberia, which focuses on Spanish dance. In 1997, she was awarded the Max Award for Best Female Dancer for her performance as La Molinera in El sombrero de tres picos, staged for the reopening of the Teatro Real in Madrid.
