Atatürk had bestowed the title 'Nightingale of the East': Celal Güzelses commemorated in Diyarbakır on the 65th anniversary of his death
The singer Celal Güzelses, whom Mustafa Kemal Atatürk met by chance in 1917 and to whom he gave the title 'Nightingale of the East' due to his powerful voice, was commemorated in Diyarbakır on the 65th anniversary of his death.
As part of the commemoration events for the artist Celal Güzelses, his name was given to the street where he lived, located on Kıbrıs Street in the Sur district of Diyarbakır.
His grandson, who bears the same name, Celal Güzelses, said in his speech here that his grandfather's name is kept alive in the city's streets and in people's hearts.
'HE LOST HIS SON ON THIS STREET'
Stating that it is meaningful for his name to be given to this street as well, Güzelses said, "Because he lived here for many long years. He wrote and composed his works here. He lost his son on this street. I would like to thank those who contributed to giving his name to this street and the people of Diyarbakır."
Following the speech, the opening of the street was held.
Later, at the event which continued at the Diyarbakır Promotion, Culture and Solidarity Foundation (DİTAV), Güzelses's grandson signed his book "I am Celal Güzelses".
During the program, Güzelses's works were performed by artists Bedri Ayseli, İbrahim Macit, and Yervant Bostancı.
