British actress Juliet Stevenson on Gaza: 'The people are suffering'

Juliet Stevenson, who has appeared in numerous films and series including "Mona Lisa Smile," "Diana," and "Truly, Madly, Deeply," spoke to an AA reporter regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza and her support for the Palestinian people.

Stevenson stated that she participated in the recent solidarity march for Palestine in London, noting that she could not just sit at home in the face of developments in Gaza.

Stating that the situation for everyone living in the region, especially the people of Gaza, is "quite dire" due to the attacks, Stevenson said, "The people of Gaza are currently suffering to an extent that no one can imagine."

Stevenson emphasized that the events that have taken place since October 7, 2023, are a "catastrophe and barbarism" for everyone in the region.

'THEY WILL LIVE IN FEAR'

Noting that the Israeli attacks do not serve the interests of the country's people but rather "the interests of a small number of people in power," Stevenson said, "The continuation of this horrific war will not benefit anyone, including the Israelis. They will live in fear for generations; hatred and anger will continue for generations. All of this is a catastrophe."

'I HOPE THEY JOIN OUR MARCH'

Reminding that her husband Hugh Brody is also Jewish, Stevenson said, "I understand and respect the Jewish community's need to feel safe. However, the protests in support of Palestine are not organized due to antisemitism, but rather out of opposition to war and violence, and in support of life. I hope the Jewish community also joins our march. In fact, many Jews are already participating."

Stevenson, a famous actress and theater performer who holds the "Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress," one of the most prestigious awards in British theater, was also awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.
