Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' reaches $50 million on its first day at the North American box office
Nolan's adaptation of Homer exceeded expectations with its first-day gross. The film is expected to reach $117 million over its opening weekend.
Christopher Nolan's new film, an adaptation of Homer's epic, "The Odyssey", has made a strong box office debut in North America. The production, which opened in 3,919 theaters on Friday, grossed $50 million on its first day.
It is estimated that the film earned $17.6 million from Thursday previews and could easily reach $117 million in revenue over its opening weekend. This picture points to a performance exceeding the pre-release expectations, which were in the $80-100 million range.
RECORD EXPECTATIONS HAVE RISEN
It is stated that if "The Odyssey" maintains its current momentum, it could approach multiple box office records. The production is being touted as a contender for the best opening of the year among non-animated films, the highest opening weekend gross for an R-rated film, and one of the strongest openings for a film starring Matt Damon.
The best opening performance of the year in the non-animated film category previously belonged to the film "Michael" with $97.2 million. In the overall annual rankings, animated productions "Toy Story 5" with $159.6 million and "Süper Mario Galaxy Movie" with $131.7 million occupy the top spots.
In the film, Matt Damon portrays Odysseus, who is trying to reunite with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway is in the cast as Penelope, and Tom Holland plays the character of Telemachus. The production also features names such as Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.
"The Odyssey" also draws attention with its technical aspects. It is stated that the production is the first fiction film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The film, which received positive reviews from film critics after its first screenings, will be one of the defining factors in the course of the summer season box office with its weekend performance.
