French Ministry of Culture statement on 'Mona Lisa protest': 'No cause justifies targeting it'

The protest at the Louvre Museum, where activists threw soup at the Mona Lisa painting to draw attention to the right to healthy and sustainable food, has become a global talking point.

The first official statement has been made regarding the action taken by the climate activist group Riposte Alimentaire, who threw soup at the Mona Lisa.

French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati informed the public following the incident.

'DOES NOT JUSTIFY'

Dati stated, "The Mona Lisa, like our heritage, belongs to future generations. No cause justifies it being targeted. All my support goes to the Louvre museum team..."

The climate activists had thrown soup at the Mona Lisa, explaining the purpose of their action by saying, "The government is betraying our fundamental right to food through its commitment to industrial agriculture and mass distribution. It threatens our health, our food security, and the lives of farmers."

'WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT?'

Asking, "Which is more important? Art or a healthy and sustainable food system?" the activists had used the phrase, "Our agricultural system is sick."
