History Lessons begin at the Italian Cultural Center: The Borders of the World
The History Lessons series, organized for the first time in Turkey this year by the Italian Cultural Center in Istanbul, will take place between February 7 and December 11, 2024, under the title 'The Borders of the World'.
The Italian Cultural Center and the Italian High School are collaborating to host the History Lessons series for the first time in Turkey this year, prepared by the Laterza publishing house, which is renowned in Italy for its academic and scientific publications.
Inspired by significant books on history, law, and humanism, and having been met with great interest in Italy, the lecture series is now preparing to welcome researchers, students, and history enthusiasts of all ages in Istanbul.
Within the scope of the History Lessons series titled "The Borders of the World," a talk will be held every month, excluding the summer period, between February 7 and December 11, 2024, at the Italian Cultural Center's Theater Hall, located in the historic Casa d'Italia building in Beyoğlu.
ACADEMICS WILL BE GUESTS
Expert academics from Turkey and Italy will be guests at the talks, which will address the borders drawn by humans from Egypt to the Greek and Roman periods, and from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. Aiming to offer participants a broad perspective on past events, personalities, and civilizations, the series is based on current historical analyses that seek to understand history in depth and reconnect with today's world.
The series, which will also focus on well-known figures in world and Italian history such as Marco Polo, who marks his 700th death anniversary in 2024, will primarily address the different and unique ways in which the concept of borders has been historically and culturally rejected.
İLBER ORTAYLI WILL ALSO PARTICIPATE
The first event of the series, which includes a total of eight conferences, will take place on Wednesday evening, February 7, 2024, at 19:00, under the title "The Borders of the World According to the Greeks."
At the event, where Italian author and playwright Paolo Di Paolo will give a comprehensive presentation on the History Lessons series, academic and Ancient Greek historian Laura Pepe, world-renowned historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, owner of the Laterza publishing house Giuseppe Laterza, and Director of the Italian Cultural Center in Istanbul Salvatore Schirmo will also take part as speakers.
The event will offer a journey through the axis of literature, starting with the Odyssey, to explore the borders of the world according to the Greeks.
