Leyla Gencer to be commemorated at AKM with 'Don Giovanni' opera

The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (İDOB) will stage the opera 'Don Giovanni' in memory of soprano Leyla Gencer.

İDOB Director and General Artistic Director Caner Akgün made a statement regarding the performance to be held tomorrow at the Atatürk Cultural Center Türk Telekom Opera Hall and the archival work belonging to İDOB.

'SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE FUTURE'

Stating that Leyla Gencer passed away 16 years ago on May 10, Akgün said, "On this occasion, we are dedicating our 'Don Giovanni' performance on May 9 to her. We want to create such visibility and markers because societies and institutions that establish a connection with their past also shed light on the future. If we show that we value something, the generations after us will also want to research why it is important."

Expressing that they use social media effectively as İDOB and present archival photos to the appreciation of art lovers, Akgün said that there are many different works in the İDOB archive.
