'Longest chess marathon' record broken in the US
Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya and American champion Shawn Martinez have broken the record for the 'longest chess marathon' in the US, playing for 60 hours.
According to reports in the African press, 29-year-old Onakoya and Martinez played chess for 60 hours in Times Square in New York.
The duo, who took a 5-minute break for every hour played, extended the duration initially set at 58 hours to complete 60 hours.
Onakoya and Martinez surpassed the Guinness World Record set by Norwegian chess players Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018, who played for 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
FUNDS TO BE RAISED FOR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
If the playing time is verified and approved by the Guinness World Records organization as compliant with the rules, Onakoya and his American opponent will become the new holders of the "longest chess marathon" record.
Onakoya hopes to raise 1 million dollars for the education of children in Africa with the record attempt that began on April 17.
