Master writer İrfan Yalçın passes away at 90
İrfan Yalçın, one of the important writers of Turkish literature, has passed away at the age of 90.
'Fareyi Öldürmek' (Killing the Mouse), 'Ölümün Ağzı' (The Mouth of Death), and 'Genelevde Yas' (Mourning in the Brothel), İrfan Yalçın, a master novelist of Turkish literature known for his books such as, has passed away at the age of 90.
Having received many awards throughout his life, İrfan Yalçın also penned various theatrical plays. His novel titled Genelevde Yas was adapted into a film.
WHO IS İRFAN YALÇIN?
He was born on April 23, 1934, in Zonguldak. He graduated from the Department of French Language and Literature at Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters. He worked as a French teacher. In 1972, he left teaching to open a bookstore in Istanbul and founded and managed Z Publishing House. After publishing poems, stories, and translations in magazines such as Varlık and Türk Dili, he took a break from his literary life for a while. Starting in 1959, his stories, critiques, and translations were published in magazines including Varlık, Türk Dili, Soyut, Gelecek, Yeditepe, and Yansıma. He won second place in a competition organized by Yeni Dergi in 1968 with his critique of “İnce Memed,” second place in the 1974 Milliyet Publications Novel Competition with his novel Pansiyon Huzur (1975), and the 1980 Turkish Language Association Novel Award with his novel Ölümün Ağzı (1979). He wrote theatrical plays. His novels Pansiyon Huzur and Fareyi Öldürmek were adapted for the stage. His work titled Ölümün Ağzı was translated into Russian and published. His novel Genelevde Yas was adapted into a film.
