Minister Nuri Ersoy announces: Hellenistic-era Scylla Group statues discovered

Statues belonging to the 'Scylla Group' from the Hellenistic period have been discovered in Denizli.

Excavation work continues at the ancient city of Laodicea, which dates back to 5500 B.C. and is home to one of the 7 churches mentioned in the Bible.

THE HEAD OF THE STATUE HAD BEEN FOUND PREVIOUSLY

During the excavations carried out in the Western Theater area this year, the statue of Asclepius, the god of medicine in Greek and Roman mythology, and the head of a statue belonging to his daughter Hygieia had been found.

In the excavation work continuing in the restoration area of the stage building, colorful 'Scylla Group' statues were found this time. The unearthing of the work excited archaeologists. The Scylla Group statues were removed from where they were found with meticulous work.

'LEGACY TO THE FUTURE' INITIATIVE

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated in a post on his social media account, "Our 'Legacy to the Future' initiative, which is the most comprehensive and ambitious project of Turkish archaeology, continues to bear fruit."

Stating that the statues reflect the baroque style of the Hellenistic Period and are quite important as they are rare works that have survived to the present day with their original paint, Ersoy said, "I sincerely thank our Department of Excavations and Research and our Laodicea excavation team working on the project."
