Muazzez Abacı laid to rest

Muazzez Abacı, one of the leading names in Turkish Art Music, has passed away at the age of 78. Muazzez Abacı, who died in Rochester, New York, due to a heart attack while she was in the US on November 12, has had her remains brought back to Turkey.

FAREWELL CEREMONY HELD

A farewell ceremony was held for Muazzez Abacı yesterday at the Istanbul Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM). Following the funeral prayer held at the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara today after the noon prayer, Abacı was laid to rest in the Cebeci Asri Cemetery amidst tears.

The funeral ceremony was attended by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Batuhan Mumcu, famous singer Sibel Can, members of parliament, and relatives of the famous artist.

Her daughter, Aslı Abacı, stated in her remarks regarding her mother's death that they had taken her mother to the hospital 2 weeks ago due to a heart attack, that an angiography was performed immediately, and that her heart vessel was opened. Aslı Abacı stated that her mother's condition was quite good, but as a result of a complication from the angiography, her mother's other organs were also affected and she could not recover. She noted that similar complications can be seen in many people after angiography, and for this reason, antibiotic treatment was started, but her mother had an adverse reaction to this antibiotic.

Stating that they did not expect the death of her mother, Muazzez Abacı, her daughter Aslı Abacı expressed her deep sorrow over losing her mother, saying, "It is a painful loss, a very great loss. It is as if she is both here and not. I am very happy that I came to Ankara. I am very happy that I brought my mother to Ankara. I am very happy that we are in Turkey. I thank you all very much. She is loved by many. We will all miss her. My mother is now entrusted to you here. I will also come and visit. My mother and I did not talk much in the last 2 days. Because her condition had worsened, we were not in a position to talk much. But we were talking until 3 days ago. We did not expect such a thing, it did not cross our minds. My mother never mentioned death until now."

MUAZZEZ ABACI'S ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Muazzez Abacı first began her music career at the Ankara Radio in 1966. In 1973, she released her first record, 'Bir Sen Kaldın İçimde Kervan'. She became one of the names who ensured that classical and polyphonic Turkish music gained popularity. After her radio years, it did not take long for her to become one of the sought-after headliners of the casinos in Istanbul, but her stage and record work were interrupted due to her private life. She was known for her signature works 'Şakayık' and 'Vurgun'. The famous artist, who came to the fore in 1990 with the song and album 'Vurgun', written by Cemal Safi and composed by Selçuk Tekay, withdrew herself significantly from the music agenda in the early 2000s, partly due to the general stagnation and decline in Turkish Art Music. In 2007, she served as a judge on the TV program 'Hayalin İçin Söyle'.
