New development in Baby Reindeer lawsuit: The real Martha could win millions of dollars

A notable development has occurred regarding the Baby Reindeer series.

In a court hearing in California, the judge found merit in the lawsuit filed by Fiona Harvey, who was portrayed as a "stalker" in the production, on the grounds that the series was not based on a "true story."

According to T24; the judge ruled that the script written by the series' lead actor, Richard Gadd, should have been verified by Netflix before being broadcast.

With this decision, it has become possible for the series' real-life Martha, Fiona Harvey, to file a defamation lawsuit against Netflix. The Scottish woman, who accuses Netflix of damaging her reputation, is seeking 170 million dollars in damages from the platform.

The show's creator, Gadd, had stated that the Netflix production was created from a fictionalized script and was not a "true story in every literal sense." Baby Reindeer had been promoted by Netflix as a "true story."

Speaking to the BBC, Harvey said, "Netflix tells these lies all the time and never stops because these lies make more money than the truth."

In an approximately one-hour interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, Harvey confirmed that she knew Gadd when he worked at a bar in London, but denied behaving like the character Martha, who sent 41,000 emails and left 350 hours of voicemails to Gadd's character in the series.

JUDGE RULED IT MISLED VIEWERS

Harvey stated, "None of this is true. I only had short email exchanges with him for joking purposes."

US Judge Gary Klausner ruled that the fact that the episodes of the series began with the words "This is a true story" misled viewers in this regard.

In his defense, Gadd claimed that Harvey had stalked him for years while he was working at a bar in London, pinched his buttocks, and sent thousands of disturbing emails and voicemails.

He stated that he reported the harassment to the police and that Fiona Harvey received a harassment warning, but it emerged that, contrary to what was shown in the series, Harvey was not charged and was not sent to prison.
