New discovery in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii: The blue room
A rare blue room has been discovered during archaeological excavations in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which was buried under volcanic ash. The room, with walls decorated with frescoes of female figures, is believed to have been used for pagan rituals and the storage of sacred objects.
Pompeii, the ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. in Italy, has been the site of new and exciting discoveries in recent excavations conducted by archaeologists.
Located southeast of Naples, the ancient city is known as one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in history.
In the latest excavations, archaeologists uncovered a room painted in a rare shade of blue in Pompeii. It was stated that the walls of this room were decorated with frescoes of female figures representing the four seasons.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE COLOR BLUE
The team stated that this room was used for pagan rituals and the storage of sacred objects, as the color blue was only found in places of great importance during that period.
Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano described Pompeii as a "treasure chest that is still partially unexplored." This discovery took place as part of a large-scale excavation project in which 13 thousand rooms in 1,070 houses have been uncovered.
Among the latest findings were blue walls decorated with handmade gold details, as well as 15 jugs, oil lamps, and three decorative boxes standing next to the wall.
The findings also indicate that the house was undergoing renovations before the volcanic eruption.
