Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa has passed away at the age of 88. According to Japanese media, Ozawa died of heart failure at his home in Tokyo on February 6.

A former assistant to Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein, Ozawa served as the music director of the Vienna State Opera between 2002 and 2010.

WHO IS SEIJI OZAWA

Born in 1936 in Mukden, China, Seiji Ozawa was known for his work with the San Francisco Symphony, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was the recipient of numerous international awards.

In 2001, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government. On February 1, 2006, the Vienna State Opera announced that Ozawa had to cancel all his conducting duties due to illness.

Seiji Ozawa passed away on February 6, 2024.
