Pelin Karahan, known for her role as Aslı in the series “Kavak Yelleri” and who later reached a wide audience with her role as Mihrimah Sultan in “Muhteşem Yüzyıl” (The Magnificent Century), made a striking statement years later.
In a program she attended, Karahan said that she did not initially accept the first offer from “Muhteşem Yüzyıl.” The actress stated that her then-husband’s disapproval of her acting career was influential in that decision.
In my first marriage, my husband did not really want me to act. When the offer for Mihrimah Sultan came from The Magnificent Century, I said, ‘No, I will not work.’
Karahan explained that she later accepted the offer out of a desire to stand on her own two feet. The actress stated that she changed her mind by saying, “As a woman, you don’t want to depend on another man; I need to take care of my mother and my brother.”
Touching on her divorce process, Karahan noted that working was an important source of strength for her, saying, “When I got divorced in the second season, I said, ‘It’s a good thing I have my job, it’s a good thing I earn my own money and am not dependent on a man.’ If it weren’t for my friends there, I might not have been able to leave that marriage.”
