Premiere of the opera “La Traviata” held

The new production of the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, the opera La Traviata, met with art lovers at its premiere held the other day.

La traviata (the fallen woman) is a 3-act opera composed by the Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi, based on the 1848 novel The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils. The work resonates not only in the literary world but also in performing arts such as theater and ballet, bringing the audience together with a timeless story.

WHAT IS THE STORY OF LA TRAVIATA?

The title "La Traviata" is used to mean a fallen woman. It tells the story of a tragic love affair set in 19th-century Paris. The protagonist Violetta Valéry, a courtesan ostracized by society, falls for Alfredo Germont with a sincere and pure love. In the first act of the opera, Violetta and Alfredo, who meet at a party, immediately fall in love. However, Alfredo's father does not deem a girl who has fallen into a life of vice like Violetta worthy of his son...

A DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION OF LA TRAVIATA

“La Traviata,” which State Opera and Ballet Chief Director Recep Ayyılmaz created by drawing on every branch of art and staged with his own interpretation, invited the audience to find themselves not just in an opera, but within a tableau of life that explores the most fundamental human emotions.

THE TRAGEDY OF A COURTESAN

La Traviata is not just a love story, but also a mirror held up to the society of that era. Beneath the fun-filled surface of Paris, social taboos, the roles assigned to women, and the liberating power of love are questioned. Violetta, as both a strong and fragile character, has become the target of these conflicts. Her tragedy is a reflection of the irreconcilable tension between individual desires and social pressures.

La Traviata maintains its throne as one of the most performed and admired works in the history of opera.

The work, which had its premiere at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) Türk Telekom Opera Hall, can be seen again at the AKM on January 25, 29, and 30.
