Renowned director Tony Gatlif passes away at 77

World-renowned director Tony Gatlif has passed away at the age of 77. It was stated that Gatlif experienced health problems while working on a historical film project in the city of Arles in southern France.

French Minister of Culture Catherine Pegard commemorated Gatlif in a post on her social media account. Pegard referred to the famous director as someone who “was devoted to backroads, fading borders, and lives that are often not seen enough.”

WHO IS TONY GATLIF?

Tony Gatlif was born on September 10, 1948, to a Kabyle father and a Romani mother. Born Michel Dahamani, Gatlif changed his name when he was about to be sent to Algeria at the age of 12, and later adopted the surname Gatlif.

After years spent in a reformatory, Gatlif was sent to Camargue and directed 25 films throughout his cinema career. The director's filmography includes productions such as the 1997 film Gadjo dilo, the 2004 film Exils, the 2012 film Indignados, and the 2017 film Aman Doktor.
