Spotify has announced that it has removed more than 50 million tracks generated by artificial intelligence and categorized as "low-quality content and spam" from its recommendation system this year. The company stated that this step is part of its efforts to protect artists and listeners from deceptive content.
According to the statement from the platform, more than 75 million spam-filled tracks that were determined to have seriously or repeatedly violated rules have been completely removed. Spotify reported that it specifically examined content that listeners skipped, did not listen to, or indicated they did not want to hear, noting that a significant portion of these tracks were classified as low-quality AI-generated content or spam.
The company stated that with updates made to the recommendation system over the last 6 months, the visibility of such content has been reduced, creating more space for music produced by real artists. It was stated that listener interactions, feedback, upload habits, metadata, and data from third-party AI detection tools are evaluated together in the detection of low-quality AI content and spam.
NEW TOOLS FOR ARTISTS
Spotify also announced that it has introduced different tools over the past year to make the music ecosystem more transparent in the age of artificial intelligence. One of these, the "AI Credits" feature, was launched in April. With this feature, artists can specify the roles and instruments for which AI was used. The company noted that artists submit tens of thousands of credit details every day.
The statement indicated that more than 300,000 artists are verified on Spotify. It was reported that these verified artists represent more than 99 percent of the names listeners search for on the platform, and that more than 70 percent of these artists consist of independent artists.
The platform also announced that it uses "AI Persona" labels to mark artist identities deemed to be created by artificial intelligence. It was noted that accounts marked with these labels, which appear on thousands of profiles, are removed from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, except for exceptions such as the listener following the profile.
Spotify also drew attention to the royalty revenue threshold applied since 2024. Accordingly, a track must reach at least 1,000 streams to generate revenue. The company stated that this rule plays an important role in protecting human artists against the wave of AI-generated content.
