Tarot director Spenser Cohen: 'We have some hidden surprises in the film'

The film Tarot, which follows the events that unfold after a group of friends break the sacred rule of Tarot reading—never use someone else's deck—will be in theaters on May 3.

The production team of the film, which horror cinema fans are eagerly awaiting, made notable statements ahead of its release.

The film's co-writers and directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg explain that the starting point of the film began when they realized that people turn to tarot and astrology to make sense of things, especially in times of uncertainty, and that they developed the idea from there.

Stating that they found an idea that would drive the entire film while researching tarot and astrology, the duo explains, "Not using someone else's deck... That is one of the fundamental rules of tarot. We started from this rule. Because every deck is personal, and in our film, it is especially so. The owner of the deck is truly devoted to it. And this will have very negative consequences for our characters," they say.

'WE LOVE HOROSCOPES'

Stating that there is something inherently frightening about tarot cards and tarot readings, Cohen and Halberg say, "We love astrology and horoscopes because they are a way to learn about yourself, but also a way to learn about the future. On the other hand, if you know what the future will bring, good or bad, it will affect the decisions you make. And just because you can know what the future will bring, I don't think it's a good idea to know it," and continue as follows:

"Is our future written in the stars, or is our destiny entirely dependent on our free will? This is a big, universal, global theme that connects everyone. But at its core, the film became a story for us about a woman talking to death."

'WE WORKED WITH A TAROT EXPERT'

Explaining that tarot and astrology are two methods that have been used to predict the future for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, Cohen and Halberg state that they wanted the film to be based on facts and history, which is why they worked with a tarot expert named Angie Banicki.

The duo, who say they gained great credibility for the film this way, continue:

"We worked with a tarot expert to ensure that everything in the script made sense and to oversee all our tarot sequences. Anyone with knowledge of astrology and tarot will see that the sequences really align, and we have some hidden surprises in the film."

Saying that they tried to make a horror film that would appeal to cinema audiences, Cohen and Halberg underline that horror is best enjoyed in a group.
