The Assassins series sparks controversy in Iran
In Iran, the ban on an Egyptian-produced series depicting the rise of the 11th-century group the Assassins, led by Hassan-i Sabbah, has been met with backlash, particularly from broadcasting organizations.
Iranian officials claim in their statements that the purpose of the series titled The Assassins is to associate terror and the origins of terrorism with Iran and Iranians, while also portraying Iranian cities such as Rey, Qom, and Isfahan as hubs for terrorists.
The decision by the Online Broadcasting Regulatory Authority (SATRA), affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, to ban the 30-episode Egyptian series The Assassins on the grounds that it distorts Islamic history and portrays Iran negatively for political purposes has sparked reactions.
Not only viewers but also digital broadcasting platforms have reacted to the ban. Broadcasters state that millions in investments made for the series' subtitling, dubbing, and copyright issues have gone to waste.
EMPHASIS ON 'PERMISSION'
Saman Murad Hosseini, spokesperson for the Iranian Internet Broadcasters Platform (RESTA), stated that while the ban could cause financial losses, broadcasters are required to apply for and obtain permission in advance for the series they intend to air.
Stating that it is out of the question for films and series to be broadcast without obtaining the necessary permits, Murad Hosseini noted that SATRA's broadcasting regulations have been communicated to broadcasters.
Murad Hosseini added that Iranian series are also subject to pre-screening, stating, "SATRA's charter has been communicated to all TV channels, and television media is obligated to implement this charter. Retrospective oversight does not mean a lack of oversight."
