The extraordinary story of Belgian artist Jeroen Yasin Demoen

Coming to Turkey from Belgium in 1993 and getting married in Sakarya, Jeroen Yasin Demoen opened an art exhibition in the Mudurnu district of Bolu.

Having learned Turkish thanks to his wife, Belgian Jeroen Yasin Demoen learned the art of marbling and sculpture in Turkey. Having studied fine arts in Belgium, Jeroen Yasin Demoen directed all his interest toward sculpture and marbling in Turkey. Having created dozens of works, Jeroen Yasin Demoen opened an exhibition at the historic Madanlar Mansion in Mudurnu. The event, where dozens of works were displayed, received great interest from the local people.

'I LEARNED TRADITIONAL MARBLING'

Stating that he met the art of marbling in 2013, Jeroen Yasin Demoen said, "I met the art of marbling 10 years ago; I am actually Belgian. I have been in Turkey for 30 years. I studied fine arts in Belgium, but I didn't know such an art existed. I learned traditional marbling for the first time, and I saw that I couldn't get enough of it; I wanted more. After that, I started learning the segments of old-style marbling used in the 16th century," he stated.

Continuing his words, Jeroen Yasin Demoen said, "Those who practice the art of marbling always work while sitting; their movements are limited. On the contrary, I work by moving; if necessary, I blow on it, or if necessary, I create waves in the water with a hair dryer, and then different works emerge. Later, I started sculpture; there was a piece of aluminum, I started cutting it, and then I continued.

'I WORK WITHOUT HARMING NATURE'

Because my wife is Turkish, I learned Turkish from her easily, and I can use it comfortably. As a Turkish citizen, my name is Yasin; when I came here, I used stones in Mudurnu. There is a closed stone quarry here; I tried to make something with a few pieces from there. I want to work with materials without harming nature," he explained.
